Product Led Doesn’t Mean Product Decides Everything

Being product led is about letting the success of the product guide decisions. That doesn’t mean Product gets to make all of them.

Being product led doesn’t mean the Product team gets to make all the decisions.

I think that gets lost sometimes.

At its core, being product led means the product itself is driving value, adoption, retention and growth. That changes how you think about what gets built and why.

Instead of measuring success by how many features shipped, you’re looking at whether people are actually using them.

Instead of building something because one customer asked for it, you’re trying to understand the problem behind the request and whether solving it makes the overall product better.

Instead of relying entirely on Sales or Customer Success to help someone understand the value of your product, you’re thinking about how the product can make that value clear on its own.

“The job isn’t to decide whose idea wins.”

But none of that means Product suddenly operates in a vacuum.

The best product managers I know are really good at balancing a lot of different inputs.

Customers know where they’re struggling. Sales knows what they’re hearing in the market. Operations knows where things are breaking down. Technology understands what’s possible and where there are opportunities we might not see. Leadership knows where the business needs to go.

And Product is sitting in the middle of all of it.

The job isn’t to decide whose idea wins.

It’s to understand the problems behind all of those ideas and figure out what will create the best outcome for the product, the customer and the business.

Sometimes the customer request is absolutely the right thing to build. Sometimes the executive has spotted an opportunity no one else has. Sometimes the data tells you something completely different.

There isn’t one person or group that always has the right answer.

Being product led means letting the success of the product guide the decisions.

And good product management is what brings all of those perspectives together to make that happen.

Is your product organization actually product led?

It’s easy to get stuck reacting to requests instead of building toward outcomes. Our Product Management Maturity Assessment can help you see where your organization stands.
